John Trumble

Total User Experience Design
John brings expertise as an instructional designer, interface designer, and usability researcher as well as experience managing design and development teams. This combination gives him the ability to offer leadership and big-picture vision to projects while contributing as a researcher and designer.

John’s background as a writer allows him to understand the dynamics involved as interfaces attempt to speak to users. His communication skills allow him to analyze these complex interactions and to translate research & review findings into clear, coherent design strategies for his clients.

Instructional Design and Management
John began his career at Apple, where he designed and wrote user's guides and online help for the full range of Apple's products. During this time, he also worked with GRD Principal Tom Gomoll to establish a usability testing program at Apple — an effort that brought users into the process of developing the Apple user experience.

Later, as manager of the System Software instructional design team at Apple, John assembled and led a multi-disciplinary team of writers, graphic designers, interface designers, usability specialists, and software engineers in the development of new online help content and designs.

Recent Projects
As a member of the GRD team, John's most recent efforts include creating conceptual interface designs, conducting field research & usability studies, and delivering expert reviews for clients including Johnson Controls, The Mark Travel Corporation, Weather Shield Windows, MSI Data, and Skyward School Administration Software.

He has conducted research and design efforts across a broad range of industries including retail, building automation and security systems, medical records and medical equipment, tax preparation, field service management, school administration, banking, investments, insurance, consumer electronics, and HR recruiting software.

John has a Master of Arts degree in Professional Writing from Carnegie Mellon University, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Wisconsin — Madison.
