John brings experience as an instructional designer, interface designer, and usability researcher as well experience managing design and development teams. This combination gives him the unique ability to offer leadership and big-picture vision to projects while contributing as a writer, researcher, or interface designer.
John began his career at Apple Computer where he designed and wrote user's guides for the full range of Apple's computer, imaging, and system software products. Although he has broad experience as a user researcher, interface designer, and manager, his love for language and talent as a writer have kept him involved in writing and instructional design throughout his career. He continues to offer writing and instructional design services to Gomoll R&D clients.
An important early accomplishment in John's career was his role as user-experience designer for the first online help system developed at Apple. John designed content, interface, and usability research for the Balloon help and Apple Guide help teams.
Continuing at Apple, John became manager of the System Software instructional design team. There he assembled and led a multi-disciplinary team of writers, graphic designers, interface designers, usability specialists, and engineers. The result of this collaboration was a new paradigm in online help that advanced Apple's award winning Apple Guide technology and integrated it with cutting-edge Web-based search, display, and authoring functionality.
As a member of the Gomoll R&D team, John's recent efforts include designing and writing user manuals for Samsung consumer electronics, conducting field research to guide the design of a Web presence for a regional blood bank, and designing and writing materials for a new out-of-box experience for WebTV.
John has a Master of Arts degree in Professional Writing from Carnegie Mellon University, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Wisconsin.
