JCPenney wanted to improve their internal systems with the goals of reducing the learning curve for new users, improving applications to more closely mirror employees actual work processes, and creating a true sense of workflow.
We observed users interacting with the applications and interviewed them to fully understand the entire workflow of setting up a new item in the system. We recorded and documented the sessions to provide a visual "day-in-the-life" of an item that we could reference throughout the design process. Our findings focused on improving the task flow and creating a more collaborative system for the community of users.
We designed an item setup solution that focused on consistency, workflow efficiencies, and collaboration. We also strived for a design that allowed a new user to get up to speed as quickly as possible. For example, we streamlined the process of setting up a new item within the design by supporting a copy function based on similar items found in the database.
By involving our users and collaborating with the development team throughout the project, we refined the product to be authentic to the real workflow process, while providing an elegant and clear visual design. We concluded the visual design phase of the project by creating a thorough style guide and providing the CSS for the development team to get started right away.
