Observational Research + Usability Testing

We first conducted observational research to better understand how Aurora Health Care’s customers accomplished a set of predominant tasks using the old website. We were able to uncover common struggles with the task flows and interactions. We used this observational data to identify and prioritize areas for greatly enhancing the user experience. For example, all of the customers appreciated the form fields for finding a doctor and location quickly, but the layout of the landing page, as well as the layout of the form fields themselves, frustrated the majority of the users. We knew that we needed to simplify the design to make the interface usable.

Iterative Design

We started the design process by creating user profiles. We then developed wireframes to support the tasks represented in the user profiles. Overlapping this process, we explored a variety of visual designs, incorporating client feedback. We wanted to balance the wealth of information Aurora Health Care provides to its customers with the specific tasks people want to accomplish.

After refining the visual designs and applying the visual style across the top tasks of the website, we conducted a second round of usability sessions to learn how users would interact with the robust working prototype. On the list of services page, users were able to quickly find what they were looking for by either filtering the list by letter or by typing within the “Search within results” box. This was a dynamic filter that modified the results as the user started typing.
